Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs 2–5 m tall.

Stems: Stems branched, pubescent.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades oblong to oblanceolate, blades 15–30 cm long, 4–9 cm wide. Apex acute. Base cuneate. Upper surfaces green, sparsely pubescent; lower surfaces pale green, densely pubescent. Margins coarsely callose–dentate. Petioles 3.5–10 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences 6–12–flowered, densely pubescent, peduncles 20–50 mm long, pedicels 15–25 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect); hypanthium obovoid, 4–6 mm long, densely pubescent. Calyx lobes narrowly triangular, 1–2 mm long, densely pubescent throughout, apex acute to acuminate. Corolla purplish, 30–36 mm long, 1.5–3 mm wide, densely pubescent, the tube suberect, the lobes spreading. Stamens 5, alternate with corolla lobes, connate; staminal column glabrous; anthers glabrous, the lower 2 with apical tufts of white hairs. Ovary inferior, 2-celled; ovule placentation axile; stigma 2-lobed, wet or dry, appressed and nonreceptive as the style grows through the anther tube, pushing out the pollen, after which the stigmas spread apart and become receptive.

Fruit: Berries unknown. Seeds: mature seeds not seen.
